Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative talents as a child, thanks to Aunt Denise. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nurse in order to give her an opportunity to study theatre or literature. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay learnt by doing that art can be a powerful vehicle to engage in activism. DuVernay's mother also had a social consciousness and taught DuVernay how to communicate through art. While DuVernay grew up in Compton with her family she lived in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. Her father was awed by the historical civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby city of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma would inspire her later to make an animated film on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she earned diplomas in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was a college student at the time she began to become interested in production for broadcast journalism. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to look over the rubbish at the home of one of jury. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied by journalism and she decided to move towards the field of publicity. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a Junior Publicist shortly after graduating from college. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. In addition to PR her agency launched a number of lifestyle and promotional networks including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
